Saturday, December 7
11am–1pm
Christ Episcopal Church
76 Franklin Ave., 10301
At this two-part workshop, you’ll collect native seeds and learn how to sow and nurture them through the winter months, so they’ll be ready for spring planting in your garden.
First, learn how to collect, process, and store native plant seeds to produce more plants for your garden and to share with friends and neighbors. Weather permitting, we will start at the Virginia N. Sherry Memorial Garden to collect seeds. We will then move indoors to Christ Church Parish House for hands-on activities to identify and prepare the seeds for storing or planting. Attendees will leave with packets of native seeds to take to their gardens.
Next, you’ll learn how to germinate the seeds of native plants using the winter sowing method. You can use the seeds you collected earlier, or bring other seeds you’d like to give a head start. In this simple process, you take a one-gallon milk jug and make it into a small greenhouse by cutting it in half, putting some drainage holes in the bottom, putting wet soil in it, adding the seeds, and resealing the jug. The jug will then stay outside for the winter in order to stratify the seeds.
Please bring your own plastic milk jugs for the winter sowing portion of this workshop. Soil and planting tools will be provided.
All are welcome! Workshop is free for members, and $5 for the general public.
